A thousand years ago Prince Shotoku is said to have founded Houanji Temple. This is Houanji Temple. We stand before it now. Its history is rich and complex. It’s a testament to Osaka’s enduring spirit.
Houanji Temple wasn’t always here. Originally located in Shigino it moved to its present site. This was during the reign of Emperor Suiko. The temple’s name changed too. It received a koan from the Buddhist monk Hiromichi.
The temple held a special place in the hearts of Osaka Castle’s rulers. Generations of them supported it. They showed their devotion. This continued until the Meiji Restoration. The Haibutsu-kishaku movement stripped Houanji of its temple territory.
The temple faced devastating losses. A fire destroyed much of it. This happened during a World War II air raid. However hope remained. The Sho Kannon and Kangiten statues survived. Priest Tatsuei restored them. He rebuilt Houanji to its current state in 1888. It stands as a symbol of resilience.
