Maybe you’ve walked past this memorial without realizing its significance. The 法然 Statue stands as a quiet reminder of a Jodo sect founder. Let’s delve into the story of Honen and his connection to Osaka.

Honen, also known as 法然, founded the Jodo sect in 1185. He built a small hut on this very site. Here, he practiced nissokan. Nissokan is a unique meditation facing west. Monks envision heaven during sunset. This hill was known for beautiful sunsets. Even Emperor Shirakawa practiced here.

The connection between Honen and Isshinji Temple adds layers to the story. Honen’s hut eventually became Isshinji Temple. Nene, Hideyoshi’s wife, donated land in the 15th century. This donation helped the temple flourish. Tokugawa Ieyasu even camped here during the Siege of Osaka.

The Osaka Fire Raids of WWII destroyed Isshinji Temple. But the temple was rebuilt in a modern style. The temple is now famous for its Buddha statues made of human bones. People donate ashes to the temple if they lack a grave. Isshinji makes a new statue every ten years. The ashes are incorporated into these statues. Regardless of religious beliefs, Isshinji accepts ashes. These statues are housed in the Nokotsudo and Okotsubutsudo buildings.

Isshinji also contains Honda Tadatomo’s grave. Tadatomo was one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s retainers. He lost a battle due to drunkenness. Ashamed, he fought bravely later. He swore to help those suffering from alcoholism at his death. People donate rice paddles at his grave seeking his help.

East of the main temple lies the Sanzenbutsu-do. This building houses roughly 1,000 Buddha statues. Visitors walk clockwise around the statues to pray. They pray to Buddhas of the past, present, and future. After three rounds, they see three thousand Buddhas.

The 法然 Statue serves as a reminder of Honen’s original hut and the Jodo sect’s beginnings. It also signifies the history of Isshinji Temple. It links the past to the present. It encourages reflection on life, death, and spiritual devotion. It’s a place where ancient practices meet modern life.
