Have you noticed the curious stone statue in front of you? It stands here, in the peaceful grounds of the Saigan-ji Temple, more commonly known as Aburakage-jizo. It is said that this statue, standing sentinel at the gate of the temple, is known for its ability to grant wishes, especially those related to prosperity and success. The history of Saigan-ji Temple goes back to the year 1590 when it was founded as part of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. During its existence, the temple has changed location and been rebuilt many times, and its current location is in the Shimogyo ward of Kyoto. Before the temple was built, this area was known as a flourishing market where oil sellers, called Aburakage, plied their trade. They believed that the nearby river, the Kamo, was infused with spiritual power, and they would offer prayers, including placing small oil lamps along the river banks. Eventually, they built a shrine dedicated to the guardian spirits of the river, called Saigan-ji Temple. As the oil sellers prospered, they sought to share their good fortune with the local populace and started offering prayers and wishes to the guardian deities at the temple.

Over the years, Saigan-ji gained a reputation as a temple where wishes could be answered. One unique feature of the temple is the inscription on the statue of Aburakage-jizo. It reads, “I wear a garment like a flower of the oil-lamp.” The inscription is a subtle symbol that signifies the oil sellers and their connection to the temple.
Saigan-ji Temple may not be as grand or imposing as some other temples in Kyoto, but it’s significance lies not only in its peaceful atmosphere but also in the powerful story of wishes. The presence of Aburakage-jizo, standing guard at the gate of the temple, is a reminder of how faith and prosperity often go hand in hand.
