A breathtaking feat of engineering. That’s the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. This incredible bridge-tunnel system connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It dramatically reduces travel time between these two bustling cities.
Before the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link existed travel between Shenzhen and Zhongshan was a two-hour journey. Now it’s a mere 30 minutes. Imagine the impact on commuters businesses and the overall economy. This wasn’t always the case. Shenzhen initially aimed to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. However a different design left Shenzhen out.
The idea of a separate link was proposed in 2008. It faced delays due to concerns about competing with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The project finally gained momentum in 2011. Construction began in 2017 and concluded in 2024. The total cost was a staggering US$4.83 billion.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just a bridge. It’s a complex system. It includes a 6.7 km tunnel. Nineteen bridges span a total of 43 km. The longest continuous bridge section stretches for 22.5 km. About 15.5 km of this impressive length is above sea. The bridge features eight lanes. Vehicles can travel at speeds up to 100 km/h.
Opened on June 30 2024 the bridge immediately saw high traffic. Congestion was reported in the early days. Drivers even used the Humen Bridge as a detour. Despite this the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a symbol of progress. It’s a testament to China’s ambition and engineering prowess. Within the first month over 3 million vehicles crossed it. It has become an essential part of the Pearl River Delta’s transportation network. Its opening reshaped the road network layout. It significantly impacts economic and social development of the Greater Bay Area. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a path. It’s a connector a symbol and a testament to human ingenuity.
