Across the Shahe River two bridges once stood. The northern bridge was named the Dianshan Bridge. The southern one was called the Anyi Bridge. Built of stone these bridges served as vital crossings. They connected the bustling lives of Beijing’s people.

The Anyi Bridge held special significance. It was part of a renowned scenic spot. The spot was known as “The Eight Views of Yongping”. This area captivated poets and artists for centuries. Their works immortalized the bridge’s beauty.

Construction of the Anyi Bridge began in 1448. Emperor Zhengtong ordered its creation. He wanted a sturdy structure to replace the old wooden bridges. These old bridges frequently succumbed to floods. The Emperor’s vision was for a permanent crossing. He sought to improve both transport and safety.

The Anyi Bridge was remarkably strong. It boasted a nine-arch design. Its length measured 114.7 meters and its width 13.8 meters. The central section towered seven meters high. The bridge’s unique construction materials included special flower-shaped stones. These stones contributed to its impressive strength.

The two bridges stood just five li apart. They formed the main gateway for accessing shops and businesses along the river. The Anyi Bridge’s strategic location was key. It ensured the smooth flow of trade and commerce. This bustling activity shaped the social fabric of the area.

Sadly the Anyi Bridge didn’t survive the test of time. It fell into disrepair. By 1947 it was declared unsafe. Authorities closed the bridge to all traffic. Later during the construction of a new reservoir in 1959 the bridge met its end. It was dismantled. Some of its stones were used to strengthen the reservoir’s embankments.

A new bridge replaced the Anyi Bridge. This new structure is a testament to the ongoing evolution of Shahe. Although the original Anyi Bridge is gone its legacy lives on. The stories of the Anyi Bridge continue to resonate. They reveal the rich history of the Shahe River and its importance to Beijing. The magnificent Anyi Bridge remains a poignant reminder of the past. Its memory lives on in the heart of Shahe.
