“Beneath the shadow of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link,” a local fisherman mused, casting his net into the waters, “lies a tale of two cities.” The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link, a marvel of modern engineering, stretches across the Pearl River Delta, connecting the bustling city of Shenzhen to the quieter Zhongshan. This bridge-tunnel system, also known as the Shenzhong Link, isn’t just a roadway. It’s a symbol of ambition, a testament to human ingenuity, and a bridge between the past and the future. The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link officially opened on June 30, 2024. It fulfilled a long-held dream of connecting these two vital cities. Before its completion, the Humen Bridge bore the sole responsibility of crossing the Pearl River estuary. The Shenzhong Link significantly altered the landscape, offering a faster, more direct route. The project, a staggering 49.7 kilometers long, represents a substantial investment of approximately US$4.83 billion. The Link is more than just a bridge. It’s a bridge-tunnel system comprised of a series of bridges and tunnels, including the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Tunnel, Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge, and Zhongshan Bridge. It begins near Bao’an International Airport on the Shenzhen side and spans the Pearl River Delta with a combination of impressive bridge sections and underwater tunnels. The longest span reaches an impressive 1,666 meters. The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link carries eight lanes of the G2518 Shenzhen–Cenxi Expressway, allowing for a smooth and efficient flow of traffic, with four lanes dedicated to each direction. The intended design allows vehicles to travel at speeds up to 100 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan to under 30 minutes. However, the initial days following the opening saw unexpected congestion. Some commuters faced long delays and even resorted to using the older Humen Bridge. Despite these initial challenges, the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link stands as a symbol of progress and connection. It has quickly become a vital artery in the Pearl River Delta, facilitating trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Shenzhen and Zhongshan. This impressive structure, a testament to human endeavor, promises to reshape the region for generations to come.
