Journey back to 1625. Imagine Osaka, a city crisscrossed by canals and rivers, earning it the nickname “Naniwa Eight Hundred Bridges”. Now, picture the Nagahoribashi Bridge. This bridge wasn’t just another crossing. It was the very first bridge built over the Nagahori River. This river stretched nearly 2,500 meters long and 30 to 40 meters wide. The Nagahoribashi Bridge connected the Higashiyokobori River and the Kizugawa River. This made it a vital link in the city. Alongside Shinsaibashi and Shinanobashi, Nagahoribashi played a key role in Osaka’s development. All three were Kogi Bridges, managed by the Edo Shogunate, demonstrating their importance. Over time, the landscape of Osaka changed. During the Meiji period, many rivers were reclaimed. Sadly, this meant many bridges disappeared. The “Naniwa Eight Hundred Bridges” dwindled. Nagahoribashi was one of the bridges lost to time. Today, a monument stands in its place. The name lives on as a subway station. It serves as a reminder of the bridge’s significant role in Osaka’s history.
