Yongning Ancient City. A name that whispers tales of emperors and enduring peace. We stand before Yongning Ancient City, not in Beijing, but nestled in the heart of Yongning Town, Yanqing District. This isn’t the Yongning Ancient City often confused with the one near Beijing. This Yongning Town, also known as 永宁镇, boasts its own rich history. Established in 1414 during the Ming Dynasty, Yongning translates to “Eternal Peace.” This ancient city was a vital military stronghold, the eastern command of the Xuanfu garrison, housing 8,000 troops. Imagine the bustling activity within these walls, the clash of swords during training exercises, the constant vigilance against potential threats. Over time, Yongning’s military importance waned, especially by the late Qing Dynasty. The Cultural Revolution further eroded its historical fabric, leaving its cultural relics in ruins by 1976. Yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Yongning Ancient City has been reborn. A government initiative in the 2000s breathed new life into this historic gem. The restoration efforts have revived its architectural landmarks, offering a glimpse into its glorious past. At the heart of the city stands the magnificent Yuhuang Pavilion, a three-tiered structure over 30 meters tall. A wooden staircase invites you to ascend and discover its secrets. A stone tablet within the pavilion reveals its surprising age – built in 645 AD during the Tang Dynasty, predating even the famed Prince Teng’s Pavilion. As you wander through the restored Ming and Qing-style pedestrian shopping streets, imagine the merchants hawking their wares, the lively chatter of locals, the aroma of street food filling the air.
