“Lady Victory,” they called her. This is a story about Eishoin Temple. It stands as a testament to courage and devotion.

Eishoin Temple is nestled near Konkai-komyoji Temple. You can find it along the path to Shinnyo-do Hall. The temple’s vermilion-lacquered entrance gate immediately grabs your attention.

Eishoin is a sub-temple of Konkai Komyoji. Morikatsu Kimata a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu built it in 1589. Kimata later served under Ii Naomasa. He was the first lord of Hikone.

But who was Eishoin? She was Okaji no Kata. She was one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s concubines. Ieyasu favored her. She had shown bravery by following him into the Battle of Sekigahara. Ieyasu believed her presence ensured victory. He thus called her Okatsu no Kata or “Lady Victory.” She even accompanied him in the Siege of Osaka.

Eishoin Temple’s garden is a must-see. It is exclusively unveiled during the fall foliage season. Though small the garden transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors. This immersive experience makes it a special destination.

The path from Konkai-komyoji Temple to Shinnyo-do Hall offers foliage walks. Eishoin Temple sits on the north side of Konkai Komyoji Temple. Its vermilion gate faces the path.

Konkai Komyoji Temple’s garden is also nearby. It is another good spot to enjoy the autumn leaves. Shinnyo-do is yet another sightseeing spot nearby.

Eishoin Temple beckons. It is a hidden gem. Its intimate garden becomes a captivating canvas of vibrant hues. Remember Lady Victory. Remember her courage. Remember her devotion. She is forever part of Eishoin.
