In 2000, a dream began to take shape at the foot of the Yan Mountains, north of Beijing. This dream, known as the Shangyuan Art Center (水岸藝術中心), was the brainchild of poet Cheng Xiaobei and a collective of artists. They envisioned a utopia where creativity could flourish, a sanctuary for artists, poets, writers, and architects. For seven years, they dedicated themselves to this vision, meticulously selecting the perfect location, meticulously planning, and painstakingly constructing. Finally, in 2007, the first phase of the Shangyuan Art Center was unveiled. This remarkable complex, comprising 21 unique examples of modern architecture, sprawls across 30,000 square meters of land. Within its walls, you’ll discover a salon space for lively discussions, a library filled with inspiration, an exhibition hall showcasing groundbreaking works, and an open-air platform offering breathtaking views of the Yan Mountains. The Shangyuan Art Center isn’t just about physical spaces. It’s about fostering a spirit of collaboration and exchange between different artistic disciplines. It aims to break down the barriers that often isolate artists within their own fields. Imagine painters engaging in dialogues with poets, musicians collaborating with architects, all within the vibrant ecosystem of Shangyuan Art Center. The center also offers a unique residency program, providing outstanding artists from various disciplines with free studios and apartments. This program, known as the “Uninterrupted Art” Support Program, nurtures creativity by providing a peaceful environment and ongoing support. Shangyuan Art Center believes in art that springs from an independent creative spirit, art that possesses a unique poetic language. It champions work that reflects the artist’s present existence, art that is deeply rooted in genuine life experiences. It’s not just about established artists; the Shangyuan Art Center is equally committed to nurturing the next generation of creative minds, providing young artists with the support and encouragement they need to flourish. So, as you stand before the Shangyuan Art Center, remember that you’re not just looking at buildings. You’re witnessing a living testament to the power of artistic vision. It’s a place where creativity finds its home, a sanctuary where the human spirit can soar.
