This stone stands as a marker for the former residence of Fujiwara no Teika. He lived in the Kyogoku area. Fujiwara no Teika also known as Kyogoku Chunagon was a prominent figure. He lived from 1162 to 1241.

Teika’s influence extended far beyond his neighborhood. He excelled as a poet and calligrapher. People deeply respected his calligraphy style calling it “Teika-style”.

Emperor Go-Toba recognized Teika’s talent. Teika’s poetic style greatly influenced the Emperor. Teika left behind a diary. It spanned from 1180 to 1235. The diary is named “Meigetsuki”.

Interestingly the stone’s location isn’t quite accurate. The true site lies on Ichijo Kyogoku. There you will find another stone marking the actual residence.

This stone was erected in November of Taisho 5 or 1916. The Kyoto City Education Association erected it. This stone serves as a reminder of Fujiwara no Teika’s legacy. It connects us to a celebrated poet of Kyoto.
