“When was this stele erected?” Someone might ask, gazing up at the 此付近継體天皇楠葉宮地 Stele. Right here, in Kyoto stands a stone marker. It commemorates Emperor Keitai. Let me tell you about this emperor and why this stele is here.

The 此付近継體天皇楠葉宮地 Stele marks a connection to a significant figure in Japanese history. Emperor Keitai, the 26th emperor of Japan, reigned in the early 6th century. Dates assigned to his life and reign are not firm. Conventionally, his reign is considered to be from 507 to 531.

Legends shroud Emperor Keitai’s early life. Some say he was King Ohodo of Koshi. Koshi was a smaller tribal entity in northern central Japan. This region reached toward the Sea of Japan coast.

Keitai’s lineage is complex. According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Buretsu died without a successor. Keitai, a fifth-generation grandson of Emperor Ojin, ascended the throne. Some historians believe Keitai began a new dynasty. This would mean Emperor Buretsu was the last monarch of Japan’s first recorded dynasty.

The 此付近継體天皇楠葉宮地 Stele serves as a reminder of Keitai’s impact. After Buretsu died, Kanamura suggested Keitai as an heir. Keitai was 58 years old at the time. His mother was a seventh-generation descendant of Emperor Suinin. His father descended from Emperor Ojin.

Regardless of genealogy debates, disputes arose after Keitai’s death. Confrontations occurred between supporters of different sons. These sons would later become Emperor Ankan, Emperor Senka, and Emperor Kinmei.

Emperor Keitai’s reign saw the Iwai Rebellion in 527 or 528. This took place in Tsukushi province. Keitai sent Mononobe no Arakabi to suppress the rebellion.

The actual location of Keitai’s grave remains unknown. He is traditionally venerated at a memorial Shinto shrine. This shrine is at the Ooda Chausuyama kofun in Ibaraki, Osaka. The Imperial Household Agency designates this location as Keitai’s mausoleum. It is formally named Mishima no Aikinu no misasagi.
