Zhengyangmen, or Zhengyang Gate, stands as a testament to Beijing’s imperial past. Known colloquially as Qianmen, or Front Gate, Zhengyangmen marked the southern entrance to the inner city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Originally built in 1419 and named Lizheng Gate, it was later enhanced with a watchtower and barbican. In 1439, it received its current name, Zhengyangmen. The gate complex includes the gatehouse, archery tower, and barbican, forming a complete ancient defensive structure. The gatehouse sits atop a brick platform, with two levels and doorways on all four sides. Emperors would traditionally use the south gate for grand processions. The archery tower is the largest of its kind among Beijing’s inner city gates. It boasts a unique feature: an open gateway, allowing for the passage of the emperor’s carriage. The archery tower has four levels and 94 arrow windows. Sadly, the original barbican was demolished in 1915 to improve traffic flow. The current archery tower and gatehouse are reconstructions based on similar structures due to the destruction of original blueprints during the Eight-Nation Alliance invasion. Zhengyangmen holds a unique distinction among Beijing’s nine main gates, as its gatehouse is the only one still standing. Zhengyangmen has witnessed pivotal moments in history. In 1900, the Eight-Nation Alliance caused severe damage to the gate complex, further contributing to its reconstruction in a modified form. It later served as a backdrop for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s entrance into the city in 1949. Declared a National Key Cultural Heritage Site in 1988, Zhengyangmen stands as a powerful reminder of Beijing’s enduring history. Today, both the gatehouse and archery tower are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the past.
