Have you seen a cat dance under the moonlight? Shonenji Temple, affectionately known as the “Cat Temple,” holds a curious tale. Established in 1606 by Lord Matsudira Nobuyoshi for his mentor, the high priest Gakuyo, Shonenji Temple initially prospered. Located in Kyoto’s Nishijin district, near the bustling streets of Higashini-jo, the temple enjoyed a period of wealth. However, this prosperity waned after Lord Nobuyoshi’s passing. The temple fell into hard times, struggling to maintain its upkeep. The third chief priest, a lover of cats, shared his meager meals with his beloved feline companion. One night, returning from his alms-seeking, the priest witnessed a strange sight at Shonenji Temple. A beautiful princess danced gracefully under the full moon. But on the shoji screen, he saw the shadow of his cat behind the dancing figure. Enraged, the priest chased the cat away, believing it was mocking his hardship. A few days later, the cat appeared in his dream. It instructed him to welcome samurai warriors who would visit the next day, promising the temple’s revival. The dream proved true. Warriors from the Matsudaira family arrived, requesting the enshrinement of their deceased daughter. Shonenji Temple regained its former glory, thanks to the intervention of the priest’s cat. An old pine tree on the temple grounds, said to be planted by the priest, is known as the “cat pine.” Its wide branches, stretching 20 meters long, resemble a cat lying down. Shonenji Temple continues to honor the spirit of animals, offering memorial services and housing a monument for deceased pets. The temple serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways kindness can be repaid. The story of Shonenji Temple’s cat resonates through time, a testament to the unique connection between humans and animals.
