Is it possible that this modest temple before us holds secrets dating back over a thousand years? We are standing at Shoden-ji also known as 正圓寺, a Buddhist temple in Abeno-ku Osaka. It was founded in 939.

Shoden-ji is a temple of the Shingon sect.

Osaka itself has a long history. Since ancient times, Osaka has been a place where people from all over the world have gathered. Osaka is located where the Seto Inland Sea and several rivers meet. It developed as an economic center. It was the gateway to Japan, welcoming traders and travelers from all over Asia.

Osaka flourished as Japan’s economic and political center in the 5th century. Naniwazu, in what is now Osaka’s Chuo Ward, was a port used as a gateway for Korea, China, and other Asian countries. Visitors brought crafts and techniques. They also brought Buddhism.

As Buddhism spread, Prince Shotoku built Shitennoji Temple in 593. In 645, Emperor Kokutoku moved the capital from Nara to Osaka. Naniwa Palace, built by Emperor Kokutoku, still remains as Naniwa Palace Ruins Park. It is considered the oldest imperial palace in Japan.

Even after the capital moved, Osaka continued to develop. It played an important role in trade and cultural exchange.

In the late 1100s, the Genji clan defeated the Taira clan. This marked the start of the Sengoku period.

In the 14th century, wars devastated Osaka. In 1496, Rennyo began construction of Ishiyama Gobo. Ishiyama Gobo was a temple and residence for monks. It later served as a fortress.

In the latter half of the Muromachi period, Oda Nobunaga attacked the Uemachi Plateau in Osaka. Oda Nobunaga attacked Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple for over 10 years. Eventually, Osaka came under Oda Nobunaga’s control.

Then, Nobunaga’s successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, based in Osaka, began to rule Japan. Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle in 1583. The castle and town were burned down in 1614 and 1615. The Toyotomi clan was destroyed.

The Tokugawa clan took control and the political center moved to Edo that is present-day Tokyo. Japan then entered a period of national isolation. Osaka quickly recovered and grew again as an economic city. At that time, Osaka was called “the kitchen of the world.” Important goods, including food and rice, were frequently bought and sold here.

Osaka’s economic growth led to the development of its own unique culture. Popular arts emerged, derived from traditional culture. Osaka is also a city that contributed to education.

The Meiji Restoration was the biggest reform in Japanese history. The capital was moved to Tokyo. Osaka tried to transition to an industrial city. By the end of the 19th century, Osaka was called “Manchester of the East.”

One-third of Osaka was destroyed by American air raids during World War II. However, postwar reconstruction plans and the attitude of Osaka people brought the city back to life.

In 1970, Osaka was chosen as the site of Asia’s first World Expo. Osaka has hosted all kinds of international events since then. Osaka is an important city in modern Asia and a world-class metropolis. Shoden-ji stands as a silent witness to Osaka’s long and rich history. It is a reminder of the city’s enduring spirit.
