“Shokoku-ji? Isn’t that pronounced differently?” You might be surprised to learn that the common pronunciation of Shokoku-ji is actually incorrect. Right here, before us, stands Shokoku-ji, the often mispronounced temple! It’s officially known as Mannenzan Shokoku Joten Zenji, a name that speaks to its grandeur and significance. As the second of the Kyoto Gozan, Shokoku-ji held an esteemed position among the five leading Rinzai Zen temples in Kyoto during the medieval period. Imagine the bustle and activity this temple witnessed in its heyday back in 1394. That’s when Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu oversaw the completion of the main Buddha Hall. Sadly, much like a phoenix rising from ashes, Shokoku-ji has braved numerous fires throughout history, leading to several reconstructions. A devastating fire in 1788 consumed nearly all the main buildings, leaving behind only the Dharma Hall and the Imperial Gate. Yet, these silent remnants, along with the tranquil atmosphere beneath the intertwined branches of pine and cypress trees, offer a poignant glimpse into Shokoku-ji’s glorious past. It’s a reminder of the enduring spirit of this ancient temple.
