“Winning Daruma,” a phrase you might hear whispered around Sakurai Shrine. Sakurai Shrine embodies history and culture. It is deeply rooted in this area of Sakai City. Known also as Kamikamiya Hachimangu. Sakurai Shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Chuai.

Sakurai Shrine is a Shinto shrine. It is located in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The shrine’s founding date remains unknown. However, its annual festival occurs on the first Sunday of October.

Sakurai Shrine was once designated as a Prefectural shrine. This highlights its distinguished history. The main hall was built in the early Kamakura period. This hall is designated as a National Treasure. It is the only one of its kind in Sakai City. Its historical significance is immense. It draws many worshippers.

The main hall features a simple gabled and hipped roof. It has tile roofing. Its austere design is reminiscent of temple architecture. It has a five-bay front and a three-bay side. It adopts a wari-haiden style. This is a type of divided main hall. The central bay of the five-bay front serves as a passageway. This passageway is called medou. Rooms are on either side. Traces indicate that it originally had flooring throughout. There was also a veranda around the building. This makes it a precious resource. It helps to understand architectural styles of the time.

Sakurai Shrine is deeply entwined with the local community. The Kamikamiya no Koodori dance is performed. It is performed during the autumn festival in October. Originally, it was dedicated to the Kokujinjinja. This was the local guardian shrine. This dance represents enduring traditional culture and local faith.

In recent years, Sakurai Shrine has gained recognition. It is known as a “winning Daruma” temple. Daruma dolls are placed throughout the grounds. These are associated with Katsuouji Temple. This temple is known for its Daruma dolls. These dolls are offered for good fortune. They are believed to help in business and academic success. They are a popular item among visitors.

To get to Sakurai Shrine, take the Nankai Bus. Take Route 23 heading towards Hata. Get off at Sakurai Jinja-mae. Alternatively, take Route 24. Head towards Hachigamine. Get off at Katakura. Then walk for about 5 minutes.

Sakurai Shrine is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There are no closing days. Admission is free. Parking is available. You can probably fit about three cars on each side of the torii gate. There’s a larger parking lot next to the east side of the shrine. But it’s usually closed. Restrooms are available.

Sakurai Shrine is more than just a historical site. It’s a place where history, culture, faith, and modern aspirations converge. As you wander through its grounds, remember the generations who have come before. Consider their hopes and dreams. Maybe even pick up a Daruma doll. Maybe it will bring you some good fortune.
