Whispers of broken vows and mended hearts echo around Ichiidani Nanano Shrine. This small Shinto sanctuary rests on the site of a former residence for imperial princesses. During the Heian period, these princesses served as shrine maidens at the revered Kamo Shrine. Imagine these women, daughters and granddaughters of the emperor, living in a monastery-like complex, far from the bustling city. Ichiidani Nanano Shrine is steeped in history, a history that stretches back centuries. The princesses resided here until 1212. Later, the site became a battleground during the devastating Onin War, which ravaged Kyoto. Ichiidani Nanano Shrine wasn’t always located here. The shrine we see today was moved to this location by the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the late sixteenth century, Hideyoshi, who briefly unified Japan, commanded his daimyo lords to construct a stone mound for the shrine. Look closely, and you can still see the lords’ family crests on some of the stones. Ichiidani Nanano Shrine is known for its association with repairing relationships damaged by infidelity. The story goes back to the reign of Emperor Uda. When his wife discovered his affair, she visited the predecessor of Ichiidani Nanano Shrine. There, she prayed for the restoration of her husband’s love. Before leaving, she stacked small stones into the shape of a mountain, a symbolic act believed to have rekindled his devotion. Ichiidani Nanano Shrine continues to hold this special significance today, a quiet testament to the enduring power of love and forgiveness.
