Over this river stands the magnificent Marco Polo Bridge. Its elegant arches span the Yongding River a major tributary of the Hai River. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a testament to centuries of Chinese ingenuity and a silent witness to pivotal moments in history.

The Marco Polo Bridge or Lugou Bridge as it is known in China boasts a history as rich as its architectural splendor. Construction of the original bridge began in 1189 during the Jin dynasty. It was completed in 1192. The bridge was later reconstructed in 1698 under the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing dynasty following damage from a flood.

Marco Polo himself praised the bridge during his 13th-century travels. His glowing descriptions cemented its name in European history as the Marco Polo Bridge. The bridge’s fame however extends beyond the tales of intrepid explorers. It tragically became the site of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937. This event marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War a dark chapter in Chinese history.

Look closely. Notice the hundreds of stone lions that adorn the bridge’s sides. They are a truly unique feature. Each lion is different in posture and age. Some are from the Yuan dynasty others from the Ming and Qing dynasties. A few even date back to the Jin dynasty. There’s a mystery surrounding these lions. Their exact number remains a subject of debate with estimates ranging from 482 to 501. Records indicate there were originally 627. Can you spot them all? Each lion has unique details. Some even have smaller lions hidden on them.

At each end of the bridge stand four ornamental columns. They are 4.65 meters high. One column supports a white marble stele that commemorates the Kangxi Emperor’s reconstruction. The other stele bears the calligraphy of the Qianlong Emperor. His inscription reads “Morning moon over Lugou”. For 800 years the bridge has been a renowned scenic spot in Beijing.

The Marco Polo Bridge is not merely a beautiful structure. It is an architectural masterpiece. Its construction from granite is impressive. The large central arch is flanked by ten smaller ones. Triangular iron pillars protect each pier from damage by floods and ice. The bridge served for many years as a vital transport route. Later new bridges were built to alleviate traffic congestion. Now the Marco Polo Bridge stands as a testament to China’s past. A symbol of its resilience. It stands as a landmark in Beijing’s history a place where past and present intertwine. This remarkable bridge is more than just stone and mortar. It’s a living history book. A story etched in granite and guarded by watchful stone lions.
