Can you imagine a scholar so engrossed in his books that he would even read on his way to work? That was Hashimoto Kyokai for you! Right here, marked by this modest stone, stood the home of this eccentric scholar of Japanese history. Born in 1755, Hashimoto Kyokai served as a Shinto priest at the prestigious Kamo Shrine. Although born into a family responsible for maintaining the shrine, Kyokai preferred the company of ancient texts to ceremonial duties. He devoted his life to studying Japanese history and literature, particularly ancient Japanese maps and the works of the renowned scholar Motoori Norinaga. Kyokai even corrected many of Norinaga’s writings, a testament to his deep knowledge. Kyokai’s dedication to scholarship was legendary. People would often see him so absorbed in reading that he’d bump into things, sometimes even ruining his clothes! But he remained unfazed, his mind lost in the world of knowledge. Today, this stone serves as a quiet reminder of Hashimoto Kyokai’s life, a testament to the power of passion and an enduring love for learning.
