“A stele?” I hear you ask. The 横野神社跡地 Stele marks a spot of profound history. It is easy to miss.

Let’s explore the story of the 横野神社跡地 Stele. The stele stands as a marker. It commemorates the former site of the 横野 Shrine. This Shinto shrine once stood proudly in this very area of Osaka.

The 横野 Shrine itself has a history shrouded in some mystery. Its origins are not entirely clear. Some believe it is linked to the “Yokono Dyke”. The Yokono Dyke is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki. This is one of Japan’s oldest historical chronicles. The chronicle mentions the construction of the Yokono Dyke in the 13th year of Emperor Richu’s reign.

The exact location of the Yokono Dyke remains unknown. Yet during the Edo period researchers placed it near here. They were defining the locations of 式内社 or 式内sha. These are shrines deemed significant by the Imperial Court. The 横野 Shrine was likely dedicated to the protection of this dyke.

Dykes were crucial in ancient times. This area was low-lying. It was prone to flooding from seawater and the nearby rivers of the Yamato River system. The dyke would have been vital for protecting local communities and farmland. Thus the 横野 Shrine held significant importance. It was a guardian spirit for the people.

Interestingly the enshrined deity Inashiki-irihiko-no-mikoto has ties to civil engineering. He was the second son of Emperor Kinmei. Historical records credit him with constructing ponds and undertaking other land projects in Kawachi and Izumi Provinces. This connection further supports the shrine’s role as a protector of the dyke.

During the Edo period the shrine fell into disrepair. It was temporarily moved to the Tatsumi Shrine also known as Hachiman-gu. However, it was later re-established as the 式内社 横野 Shrine by researchers. It was returned to its original location.

In 1907, during the Meiji era, it was merged with the Tatsumi Shrine. It exists there to this day. This merger marked the end of the 横野 Shrine as an independent entity.

Today only this stele remains. The 横野神社跡地 Stele is located in a narrow space. This is between buildings. The stone monument bears the inscription 式内 横野神社跡. This translates to “Former Site of the 式内 横野 Shrine”. People still care for it. You can often find offerings of sake.

The sign states that it is a famous historic site in Osaka. It also mentions people coming from afar to see it. Some might consider it a bit of an exaggeration.

Though unassuming it represents a tangible link to Osaka’s distant past. It reminds us of the importance of water management and the vital role shrines played in protecting communities. It speaks of the enduring power of belief. It highlights the cyclical nature of history. Shrines rise and fall and merge. The memory remains. As we stand here before the 横野神社跡地 Stele we honor that memory.
