Stepping back in time, we find ourselves in 1932. The air buzzes with activity around the newly constructed Shoin-kan (later renamed Shotoku-kan), a private residence built for the esteemed timber merchant, Mori Heibei. This very building, the Shotoku-kan, stands before us, a testament to a bygone era of exquisite craftsmanship. Shoin-kan took approximately seven years to complete, showcasing the finest materials and meticulous attention to detail. The timber, sourced from renowned regions like Mii, Kishu, and Hino, is of exceptional quality, especially the cedar and cypress used for the main rooms and alcoves. Imagine the skilled carpenters meticulously crafting every beam and joint. They created a true masterpiece of Japanese residential architecture. While the exterior exudes a traditional Japanese style, the interior reveals a blend of Japanese and Western influences, reflecting the Taisho-era modernism that was prevalent at the time. Notice the stained-glass windows and tiled fireplaces, adding a touch of Western elegance to the Japanese aesthetic. The Shotoku-kan remained Mori’s private residence for 21 years. Upon his death in 1960, it was bequeathed to Osaka Shoin Women’s University (now the Educational Foundation Osaka Shoin University), according to his will. The university renamed the building Shotoku-kan, and today it serves as a symbol of the university’s rich heritage. It’s quite fascinating to think that this building, once a private home, has become a treasured piece of history. The Shotoku-kan recently opened to the public after several years of closure. This offers a unique opportunity to experience the architectural beauty and historical significance of this remarkable building. As you explore the Shotoku-kan, imagine Mori Heibei strolling through these very halls, admiring the intricate details and enjoying the serene atmosphere he helped create. The Shotoku-kan stands as a tangible link to Osaka’s rich past, reminding us of the city’s vibrant history and its connection to the timber trade.
