Tucked away in Osaka’s bustling Umeda district, Enoki Daimyojin Shrine offers a quiet respite. This small shrine, featured even in the manga “Princess Toyotomi”, holds a rich history and offers blessings of good fortune, business prosperity, family safety, and warding off illness. Enoki Daimyojin, also known as Enoki Jinja, enshrines the deity Enoki Daimyojin, or Shirahebi Daimyojin. The name “Enoki” might lead you to believe it’s connected to the Enoki mushroom. However, the enshrined deity is associated with a white snake. The shrine’s sacred tree, an Enju tree, stands as a testament to its enduring presence. During the Toyotomi Hideyoshi era, this area was part of Osaka Castle’s third bailey. The large Enju tree served as a landmark and a symbol of the local deity. A shrine was built here, dedicated to Shirahebi Daimyojin, and it has been protected by generations. In 1945, amidst the devastation of World War II, fire swept through the area, threatening to consume the eastern side. Miraculously, the flames stopped at the edge of the sacred tree. This event is still recounted today as a testament to the shrine’s protective power. The Enju tree, believed to be over 650 years old, faced near-death in 1988. Thanks to the intervention of a tree doctor, Mr. Yamanaka, it was revived. He determined the tree was not an Enoki, as previously believed, but an Enju, native to China and cultivated throughout East Asia. Despite this, the shrine retains its affectionate nickname, “Enoki-san.” Today, Enoki Daimyojin Shrine thrives. It shares its space with the literary monument of Choku Sanjugo, a prominent figure in the Edo Period. Together, they form a unique oasis in the heart of Osaka.
