“Seven lives for my country!” Imagine Kusunoki Masashige uttering those words near Kanshinji Temple. This wasn’t just a place of worship for him. It was a sanctuary, a training ground, and eventually his final resting place.

Kanshinji Temple stands at the border of Osaka Nara and Wakayama prefectures. It is not just any temple. Kanshinji Temple is steeped in history and natural beauty.

En no Gyoja founded Kanshinji Temple in 701. Kukai, later known as Kobo Daishi, restored it in 815. The temple was initially called Reishinji Temple. It was renamed Kanshinji after Kukai’s Kannon statue became its principal object of worship.

Why is Kanshinji Temple so important? It is closely linked to Kusunoki Masashige. He is the hero of southern Kawachi. Kusunoki studied at Kanshinji Temple from age eight to fifteen. He learned Buddhism and military tactics here. Later he arranged for major renovations.

What makes Kanshinji Temple special? It houses national treasures and cultural properties. The Nyoirin Kannon bodhisattva statue is one such treasure. This statue is only viewable on April 17th and 18th each year. The Kondo golden hall is another highlight.

The Kondo hall is Osaka Prefecture’s oldest main hall. Its style blends Japanese Zen and Daibutsu influences. It has been repaired many times over the centuries.

Kusunoki Masashige’s story is woven into Kanshinji Temple. He fought for Emperor Go-Daigo. He displayed valor at Akasaka Castle and Chihaya Castle. After his defeat he was killed in battle. His head was buried at Kanshinji Temple.

The “Hokuto no Shio” or Salt of the Big Dipper is a Kanshinji Temple specialty. This salt is prayed for individually. It can be used for food purification and as a talisman.

The temple grounds offer more than just history. They showcase cherry plum and autumn foliage. Kanshinji Temple is one of the Kansai region’s 25 floral holy sites. You can find the graves of Kobo Daishi’s disciples and Emperor Go-Murakami here.

Consider Kanshinji Temple a journey through time. It reflects loyalty devotion and the beauty of nature. As you wander these grounds remember Kusunoki’s sacrifice. Remember his words. Remember his connection to Kanshinji Temple.
