Time whispers tales of the past. Here before us stands the imposing structure of the Hengzhou Ancestral Residence also known as the Zhenji Hengzhou Ancestral Residence. This is no ordinary building. It’s a living testament to the resilience and rich history of the Zhen family. Built in 1778 during the Qing Dynasty its name reflects its location in Hengzhou Village.
The Hengzhou Ancestral Residence is more than just a house. It’s a sprawling complex. It encompasses a hall and a large courtyard. The main structure measures approximately 66 meters long 71.6 meters wide and 6 meters high. Its imposing main gate faces northeast. The stone lintel proudly displays the inscription “Hengzhou Ancestral Residence” in elegant calligraphy.
The ancestral hall is a three-bay five-room structure. It boasts a unique combination of through-beam and lifting-beam architecture. Two corner pavilions remain intact. They are linked by corridors. The building stands tall with three stories. The roofline is a stunning example of traditional design. Each floor is punctuated by shooting holes. The third floor even features two doors.
Until the 1980s the Hengzhou Ancestral Residence was the central gathering place for the Zhen clan of Hengzhou Village. However times changed. Economic development led to the construction of new homes. Many villagers moved. The ancestral residence was eventually used to house construction workers.
Later alterations and modifications to the Hengzhou Ancestral Residence damaged some of its original features. The outer walls were even opened up with new doorways. The Hengzhou Ancestral Residence lost the enclosed character that defined it for centuries. Reclaiming its past glory is a significant undertaking.
Despite the changes the Hengzhou Ancestral Residence continues to hold immense cultural and historical value. In 2016 it was officially designated as a district-level cultural relic protection unit. It serves as a model for the revitalization of ancestral homes in Shenzhen. The Hengzhou Ancestral Residence is more than just stones and wood. It’s a legacy. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered. It’s a vital part of Shenzhen’s identity. As we stand here we connect to generations past. We feel the echoes of their lives. We are witnesses to the enduring spirit of this remarkable place. The Hengzhou Ancestral Residence reminds us of the importance of preserving our history. It is a powerful symbol of family tradition perseverance and the enduring link between past and present.
