Thirteen bone Buddhas. That’s what draws thousands to Isshin-ji each year. This isn’t your typical temple. Isshin-ji in Osaka is unique. It’s a Pure Land Buddhist temple with a remarkable history. Founded in 1185 by Honen it’s seen centuries of devotion.

Tokugawa Ieyasu even stayed here during the Siege of Osaka Castle. He became a patron after his victory. The temple’s tea room designed by Kobori Enshu is a highlight. It’s called Yatsu-mado no seki. It’s a testament to the temple’s rich past.

The story of the bone Buddhas is truly captivating. It began in 1854 with the burial of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. His burial marked the start of a tradition. Devotees began leaving their ashes there. By the 1880s over fifty thousand urns were piled high. Space became a problem. In 1887 the head priest created a solution. He commissioned sculptors to create statues of Amida Buddha. They were crafted from ashes and resin.

Sadly the war destroyed the first six statues. The temple too was ravaged by bombs. But the spirit of Isshin-ji persevered. The Nkokutsudo was rebuilt first in 1957. The Hond followed in 1966. Other buildings like the Guest Centre and Nenbutsu do were also restored. Today Isshin-ji stands as a symbol of resilience and faith.

The tradition of creating bone Buddhas continues. Seven more statues have been made since the war. The ashes of hundreds of thousands are enshrined within. Each statue is a testament to the enduring devotion of the people of Osaka. The fourteenth statue is currently in progress.

The Sanzen Butsdo built in 2002 is stunning. Its design resembles a church. It showcases a large tempera mural. It’s claimed to be the largest in the world. Amida Kannon and Seishi welcome the dying in the painting. The hall hosts services weddings and even theatre performances.

Isshin-ji holds other treasures. Municipal Cultural Properties include Edo period scrolls. Eight documents detail the temple’s history. An early 18th-century portrait of a priest also remains. Isshin-ji is more than just a temple. It’s a living testament to faith history and the enduring human spirit. A place where the past present and future intertwine. A place you won’t soon forget.
