Right here before us stands Nozaki Kannon. It is also known as Jigenji Temple. This Zen temple of the Soto sect has a rich history and serene atmosphere.
Nozaki Kannon’s principal image is the Eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva. This image dates back to the mid-Heian period. Gyoki Bosatsu founded this sacred space. Since ancient times the people of Osaka have worshiped here.
The principal image is carved from a single piece of sandalwood. It is approximately 130cm tall. The image stands on a pedestal surrounded by a dragon. Nozaki Kannon has appeared in joruri kabuki and rakugo performances. It became widely known due to Rintaro Tokai’s hit song “Nozaki Kouta” in the early Showa era.
The gates of Nozaki Kannon are always open. Anyone can visit and experience the temple’s spiritual ambiance. Located at the foot of the mountains east of the Osaka Plain visitors can enjoy panoramic city views. You can practice zazen meditation and copy sutras here.
To reach Nozaki Kannon by car take National Route 170. Go east about 130m from the Nozaki intersection. Then go south from the first intersection about 100m. Finally go east on the mountain road. Follow the road left for about 200 meters. This leads to the precinct. Parking is limited especially during New Year’s Day and Nozakimiri.
For those arriving by train take the JR Gakkentoshi Line to Nozaki Station. The temple is about 600m from the east exit. Walk through the approach shopping street then climb the stone steps to the shrine grounds. The walk takes about 12 minutes.
