Stepping onto the grounds of the Shōden Sansō tea ceremony house, imagine the gentle clinking of teacups. It’s the year 1918. Kōdai Sōhan, a prominent figure in the world of tea, envisions a place dedicated to the art of Senchadō, the open-air tea ceremony. Shōden Sansō is born on land rumored to have been a retreat for the poet Fujiwara no Teika. This land once held a villa, “Matsudo,” built centuries ago by the powerful Fujiwara clan. Sōhan dreamt of reviving the grandeur of Hiroma-style tea ceremonies. He designed Shōden Sansō himself, a testament to his unique vision. Construction began in 1919, meticulously unfolding over eleven years. The completed Shōden Sansō in 1930 stands as a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. The buildings, spread across approximately 12,000 square meters, incorporate squares and circles, reflecting Sōhan’s “Hōen” philosophy. The main house, facing the meticulously crafted gardens, comprises several interconnected halls, including the Daishoin and the Chūshoin halls, perfect for grand tea gatherings. Surrounding the main house are a constellation of smaller tea rooms, each designed to evoke a sense of tranquility and contemplation. The iconic circular pond and the Ren-sai pavilion, perched atop it, stand as symbols of Shōden Sansō’s unique character. The entire complex is a cultural treasure. In 2017, twelve of its structures were designated as Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. This includes the main house, various tea rooms like Hokushitsu, Nanshitsu, Rokusōan, and Seisetsu-rō, as well as the Holy Grail Room (Seihai-do), the Senyu-gakusha, and even the main gate (Ōmon). Even practical structures like the Shūrei Kōdō and attached office are recognized for their historical value. Shōden Sansō offers a glimpse into the rich history of Japanese tea culture, a testament to the enduring spirit of a tea master’s dream.
