Tucked away in the bustling city of Osaka, Tokoin Temple, affectionately known as “Hagi-no-tera” or the “Temple of Bush Clover,” awaits discovery. Have you ever imagined a place where vibrant history intertwines with natural beauty? Tokoin Temple offers just that. Its story begins in the Nara period, in the year 735. The Buddhist priest Gyoki, known for his compassion and skill in medicine, established a cremation site here. This act of service marked the beginning of Tokoin Temple’s long history. Initially called Yakushi-do, it later embraced the Jodo sect of Buddhism and was renamed Tokoin Temple in 1681. Tokoin Temple’s grounds are adorned with a profusion of bush clover, planted and nurtured by Gyoki himself. These delicate blossoms paint the temple grounds in a breathtaking display of color each autumn, during the annual “Hagi Festival.” The temple’s connection to bush clover earned it the endearing nickname “Hagi-no-tera,” a name whispered with reverence by locals and visitors alike. Tokoin Temple houses several significant religious artifacts. One of these is a statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, believed to be the guardian deity of Emperor Go-Daigo. Another remarkable piece is a seated wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai, crafted by Gyoki and considered a sacred treasure. The grounds also hold a memorial to Kitaoji Rosanjin, a renowned artist and gourmand. This memorial garden, called Hagi Roen, is considered one of Osaka’s 100 best green spaces. Tokoin Temple holds an interesting historical tidbit. It once housed the Toshogu Shrine of Osaka. This shrine was dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Several artifacts from the Toshogu Shrine still remain within the temple’s walls. Today, Tokoin Temple stands as a tranquil oasis amid the urban sprawl.
