Who could have imagined that a temple’s name, Honmanji Temple, could hold such profound meaning? Honmanji, nestled in the heart of Kyoto, is more than just a place of worship. Its name, meaning “Temple of Original Vows,” echoes the temple’s dedication to fulfilling the original vows of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. Honmanji Temple was established in 1410 by Nichizō, a disciple of Nichiren. The temple’s creation marked a pivotal moment in the spread of Nichiren Buddhism in the Kyoto region. Originally located in Demachiyanagi, Honmanji Temple was later moved to its present location in 1539 by Nichiren devotee and feudal lord, 近衛稙通. The move followed the destruction of the original temple during the Tenbun Hokke no Ran, a period of conflict between different Buddhist sects. This resilience reflects the enduring spirit of Honmanji and its followers. The temple faced further trials, enduring several devastating fires throughout its history. Each time, Honmanji Temple was meticulously rebuilt, a testament to its importance to the community and the shogunate. The temple gained particular favor with the shogunate in 1751 when Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune’s prayers for recovery from illness were seemingly answered at Honmanji. Today’s Honmanji Temple is a vibrant spiritual center, drawing both locals and visitors. Within the temple grounds, a magnificent weeping cherry tree, a sibling of the famed Gion weeping cherry tree, stands as a symbol of beauty and renewal. Honmanji’s tranquil gardens offer respite from the bustling city. One highlight is the “Karesansui” dry garden, a meditative space featuring meticulously raked white gravel, strategically placed rocks, and vibrant azaleas. The temple also houses several important cultural artifacts. One notable piece is the “Gold-lacquered One-Character Sutra,” believed to have been written by Nichiren himself. Honmanji Temple offers a captivating blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty. This temple is a true hidden gem in Kyoto, inviting you to experience the enduring legacy of Nichiren Buddhism amidst the vibrant cultural tapestry of Japan.
