Whispers carried on the wind tell of Honzan Kakematsu Iseki. Here at Honzan Kakematsu Iseki, we uncover a tale of faith and remembrance. This stele marks the spot of a revered pine tree. It was known as “Ue no Matsu” (Upper Pine) and “hototogisu matsu” (Cuckoo Pine). This majestic tree stood until 1897, its roots whispering stories of centuries past. Even after its fall, the remnants of its base remained, a testament to its enduring presence. Today, a new pine has been planted, carrying forward the legacy of its predecessor. Legend has it that in 1321, during the Rongoe Memorial Service, the Buddhist priest Homeyo encountered a messenger from Hachiman Shrine. This divine messenger bestowed upon him a hanging scroll of “Eleven-faced Kannon.” Homeyo, overjoyed, placed the sacred image upon a nearby pine tree and chanted sutras. This act of devotion marked the beginning of the Rongoe religious pilgrimage. The name “Kakematsu” comes from the hanging of this divine image, giving the tree and this location a profound spiritual significance. Honzan Kakematsu Iseki is not just a historical marker.
