Ready to discover an important lunar connection? We are standing before the main hall of Tsukiyomi Shrine. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the moon gods.

Tsukiyomi Shrine is a captivating place. It is located in Nishikyo Ward. The shrine is part of the Matsuo Seven Shrines. It is famous for its connection to Tsukuyomi no Mikoto. Tsukuyomi no Mikoto is Japan’s moon god. This deity is one of the most important gods. He is associated with the night and timekeeping. He is also connected to the cycles of nature.

The shrine has a rich history. Its story began in Emperor Kenzo’s reign. This was in the third year. A messenger received a message. The moon god told them to build the shrine. It was first built in Utaarasuda. Then it moved to its current spot in 856. This move avoided floods.

The deity enshrined here is the Shinto moon god. Shrine records also list two other gods. These gods are Izanagi and Izanami. They are believed to have created the Japanese archipelago. They also gave birth to its many deities.

The present building was built in 1893. Every year on October 14th, a folk dance occurs. It is called the Oosumi Hayatomai. This dance is a cultural asset of the city. It is performed as an offering to the gods.

Tsukiyomi Shrine is south of Matsunoo Taisha. It enshrines Tsukiyomi-no-mikoto. Tsukuyomi is Amaterasu’s fraternal deity. This is in the myth of Kojiki and Nihon-shoki. The Tsukiyomi Shrine has been involved with the Jingu empress. It enshrines the Tsukinobe stone. This stone represents easy childbirth. The shrine is revered as the Shrine of easy delivery patron. Expectant mothers pray here. They pray on the Day of the Dog. They hope for a cheap and restful birth.

The shrine stands as a testament. It shows the moon’s importance in Japanese culture. Its history is long. Its traditions are captivating. Take a moment to appreciate this sacred space. It links us to the moon and ancient beliefs. The Tsukiyomi Shrine continues to be a place of worship. It provides exploration for all who visit.
