“The Silk Road ends here.” Can you imagine such a bold claim? Yet, standing here before the Kuragarigoe Nara Road, also known as 暗越奈良街道, it might just hold some truth.

暗越奈良街道 is more than just a street. It is a historical route connecting Osaka and Nara. It opened roughly 400 to 500 years ago. This makes it one of the oldest roads in the region. Before this road existed, the only route from Osaka to Nara was the Takenouchi Road. That road was much longer.

This Nara Road got its name because it traverses the dark pass of Mt. Ikoma. “Kuragari” means darkness in Japanese. This road was the shortest route to Nara. Hence, 暗越奈良街道 became an important thoroughfare.

Imagine ancient travelers. Picture Indian priests and Chinese monks walking this path. They carried precious treasures now housed in the Shosoin. It is said that many items in the Shosoin traveled this road. That is how significant 暗越奈良街道 was.

During the Warring States period, the warlord Toyotomi Hidenaga frequently used this route. Later in 1694, the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho walked this road to Osaka. Think of the stories this road could tell.

In 1705, pilgrimages to Ise Shrine became popular. An estimated 70000 people per day traveled this road to Ise. This marked the beginning of the Ise Road.

The 暗越奈良街道 runs from Tamatsukuri through Nakano. It passes the Tamatsukuri Bridge, turns right, and goes through Higashinari. It continues from Ima里 to Fukae, then heads east across the Ikoma Mountains to Nara.

Road markers remain along the Nara Road. Near Nakano, one marker indicates the distance to Koraibashi. It says it is about one ri which equals approximately 4 kilometers. Another marker near Imazato points the way to Jousenji Temple. This temple had strong ties to Osaka’s Sonezaki entertainment district.

A unique road marker in Ima里 shows the way to Ise and Nara. It features a fire bag shape. It had a tube on top for holding a light at night. This helped travelers navigate in the dark. It was built around 1806.

While modern transportation has changed its function, 暗越奈良街道 remains a testament to history. It is a reminder of the countless people and goods that have passed this way. So, as we stand here, let us appreciate this ancient path. Let us remember its role as the eastern end of the Silk Road.
