Beneath the Sichuan sky, lies the Smart Airspace Integrated Vehicle and Control Engineering Research Center. It’s a mouthful, isn’t it? Let’s just call it the Engineering Research Center for now. This place isn’t about dreaming up flying cars in a sci-fi fantasy. It’s about making them a reality. The Engineering Research Center, established in 2019, is nestled within Xihua University in Chengdu. It’s a hub of innovation, tackling real-world problems like urban traffic congestion and the unique logistical challenges of Southwest China’s complex terrain. They are researching airspace integrated vehicles. Think drones, autonomous aerial vehicles, and systems to manage them all safely and efficiently. This research is critical to the development of Sichuan’s aviation industry. The Engineering Research Center has a clear mission. They aim to become a leading research base for smart airspace transportation. They focus on the design of these vehicles, their hybrid power systems, the smart control systems that guide them, and how to manage the traffic they create. The center has already constructed a 2,400 square meter research building. Inside, you’ll find cutting-edge equipment like smart flying car simulators, small-scale unmanned aerial vehicles and power testing platforms, intelligent machine control labs, and integrated traffic control labs. They’re currently developing a smart flying car wind shear test system. They also have intelligent low-carbon hybrid power integrated labs, intelligent control labs, and a manned/unmanned aerial vehicle integrated operation system. The Engineering Research Center boasts a talented team of 30 core researchers, along with around 100 research students. Since its inception, they have undertaken approximately 50 research projects, including projects funded by the National Science and Technology Major Project and the National Natural Science Foundation. They have received considerable funding and have published 50 plus articles. Their work has been recognized with awards, including the Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Third Prize and the Sichuan Provincial Technological Invention First Prize. The Engineering Research Center’s Technical Committee comprises leading experts. They provide guidance and ensure the center stays at the forefront of technological advancements. Their advice is crucial for strategic planning and future development. They emphasize collaboration with universities, research institutes, and businesses. They also believe in serving local needs, aligning their research with the demands of both the national and Sichuan’s development goals. They envision a future where seamless integration of aerial vehicles becomes the norm, contributing to the growth of the “low-altitude economy” and new types of aerial integrated equipment and control systems.
