Seven wonders they say. Seven wonders await us at Chion-in Temple. This magnificent temple is the head temple of the Jodo-shu sect of Buddhism a sect with millions of followers. Its history stretches back to 1234 when it was established by Honen’s disciple Genchi. But fires and earthquakes have ravaged it over the centuries. Much of what you see today dates back to a reconstruction project completed in 1641 under the patronage of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The wood? The finest trees from the Kiso Valley.

Before us stands the San-mon Gate. It is truly impressive. The largest wooden temple gate in Japan. A National Treasure. It’s over 24 meters tall and 50 meters wide. Over 70000 tiles cover its roof a testament to the scale of this undertaking. Can you imagine the sheer effort that went into its creation? The skill? The dedication?

Step inside the grounds. Feel the serene atmosphere. We are at the heart of a remarkable place. Notice the Mieido the main hall. A National Treasure itself. It houses an image of the founder Honen. It’s undergoing restoration but even now it’s a breathtaking sight. It’s huge 45 meters wide and 35 meters deep. It’s connected to other buildings by unique corridors. They creak like nightingales when walked upon a clever security system of old.

Look closely. Can you find the Wasuregasa the forgotten umbrella? Legend says a carpenter left it or a white fox gave it as a reward. Look for the Sanpo Shomen Mamuki-no-Neko the painting of a cat. No matter the angle it seems to watch you. There are other wonders to discover here too. The Oshakushi the giant rice paddle. The Shiraki-no-hitsugi the plain wood coffin. The legends surrounding these objects are as fascinating as the temple itself.

And then there is the bell. The Daishoro. One of the three largest bells in Japan. It weighs 74 tons. A team of 17 monks rings it 108 times on New Year’s Eve. That is a sound echoing into the new year a cleansing of past mistakes.

Chion-in Temple is more than just a building. It is a living history. A place of faith. A repository of stories. A testament to the enduring power of Japanese craftsmanship.
