Here stands Ojizo-san, a stone statue with a story etched in time. This isn’t just any statue. This is the Shusse Jizo, the Jizo symbolizing success. For centuries, it has watched over this area in Osaka.
The area we’re standing in was known as Kurouemon-cho. It thrived as an entertainment district during the Edo period. Geiko and actors would come here to pray for success. They sought the blessings of Ojizo-san.
But the story of this Jizo statue has darker chapters. During the Bombing of Osaka, it was lost. The statue disappeared. It seemed to be gone forever. Yet, a few years after the war, it was found. It was buried in the soil. It was carefully brought back to its present location. Now, it continues to be a symbol of hope and good fortune.
Jizo is a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva vows to help others achieve enlightenment. Jizo has vowed to not become fully enlightened until hell is completely empty. This deity is a saviour. Jizo leads people out of hell. Jizo is incredibly popular in Japan. This has been the case since the early 8th century.
Look closely and you might notice the small details. Jizo is often depicted as a monk. The monk wears flowing robes and has a bald head. Sometimes you will see the statue wearing a red bib. Red is believed to expel demons and illness.
Jizo is the protector of all beings. This includes expectant mothers, children, and travelers. But Jizo is especially known as the guardian of children. This includes unborn, aborted, and stillborn babies. Parents make offerings to thank Jizo for saving their children. They pray for protection from illness. Toys are often placed around the statue. These are offerings from grieving parents. They invoke protection for their child.
Every year, the Jizobon Festival is held here. The festival is a prayer for the healthy growth of local children. The Jizo-do hall is decorated with lanterns. Sutras are recited. Cold drinks are served.
