Seisho High School’s past echoes through its present. Here, in Taisho Ward, Osaka, stands a testament to evolving education. Seisho High School, formerly known as Naniwa Industrial High School, has a rich history dating back to 1938. It began as Naniwa School and Naniwa Industrial School, founded by Koshosuji Otsuka. The school moved to its current location in Mitsushima in 1941.
Seisho High School was established in 1948, reflecting the post-war educational reforms. It initially focused on technical education, with departments like Machine and Electrical Engineering. The school added general education courses in 1974 and an international sports program in 1992. This shift broadened the school’s scope beyond technical fields. The name officially changed to Seisho High School in 1995. This marked the internationalization of the curriculum and a shift towards a more comprehensive education.
The school has an interesting tradition called the “Naniwa Industrial High School Essassa”. This tradition involves male students performing a bare-chested dance. It was practiced for over 60 years and considered a symbol of Seisho High School. However, this practice ended in 2007. The growing number of female students expressed discomfort with the tradition. There were also broader societal concerns about the image it projected. Despite its discontinuation, limited revivals occurred through club selections.
Seisho High School offers various academic programs. These cater to a wide range of student interests and goals. The Industrial Technology program provides specialized training for careers in manufacturing and engineering. The General Education program offers diverse courses, including the Career Course and the Advanced Course. The International program focuses on sports, fostering athletic excellence. Students can even take special courses at external vocational schools through an inter-school collaboration program. This provides them with unique learning opportunities.
The school buildings are divided into six main sections. These include the Main Building, three school buildings, a gymnasium, and the Chishin-kan. Additional facilities include a home economics room, a machine workshop, and an arts building. Interestingly, a pool once existed on school grounds. However, it was removed in the 2000s for streamlining purposes. The land was later sold, and a large residential complex now stands there.
Throughout its history, Seisho High School has adapted to changing times. The school has embraced a more inclusive and diverse approach to education. This dedication to evolving with the needs of students and society has made Seisho High School a prominent institution in Osaka.
