Ready to discover a place where stars are believed to have fallen? Welcome to Hoshida Myokengu. It is also known as Hoshida Myoken Shrine. This unique shrine in Katano Osaka holds a special place in local lore.

Hoshida Myokengu is not just a shrine. It is a celestial landmark. Legend says that around 1200 years ago the monk Kukai was deep in prayer at Shishikutsu-dera. Suddenly seven stars from the Big Dipper descended from the heavens. These stars scattered across three spots in Katano. Hoshida Myokengu marks one of these sacred locations.

The shrine enshrines Ame-no-Minakanushi-no-Kami Takamimusubi and Kamimusubi. These deities were linked to Myoken Bosatsu in Buddhism. They were also connected to Taioshin Sen in Onmyodo until the Edo period. The main sacred object here is a large sacred rock called Orimeishi. It reflects ancient Iwakura worship. People believe it is one of two giant weaving maiden stones.

The shrine has ancient ties to Tanabata celebrations. The Kawachi Meisho Zue from 1801 mentions the sacred iwakura. It is dedicated to Orihime the Weaver Girl.

Consider the events that mark the year at Hoshida Myokengu. The Hoshi Matsuri or Star Festival takes place on February 8. Tanabata is celebrated on July 7. The Starfall Festival Hoshi Furi Matsuri occurs on July 23. These festivals connect the shrine deeply with its stellar origins.

In 2016 Hoshida Myokengu celebrated its 1200th anniversary. The shrine is also famous for its cherry blossoms. It is known as Myoken no Kansakura. It is one of Katano’s Eight Scenic Spots.

Notice the various structures within the shrine grounds. There is a Worship Hall and a Shrine Office. You can also find the Toryu Falls. Do not miss the Ema Hall, Assembly Hall and Jizo Hall. There are auxiliary shrines too. These include Chintaku Shrine Sanpo Kojin Shrine and Toyotomi Inari Shrine.

Hoshida Myokengu offers more than just scenic beauty and history. It provides a link to the cosmos. It connects the earthly and celestial realms. As you leave take a moment to reflect on the stars. Remember the legends of Hoshida Myokengu.
