Myozenji Temple. A name whispered through time, carrying the weight of centuries. Here, nestled within the heart of Shirakawa-go, stands a testament to unwavering faith. Myozenji Temple is not merely a structure of wood and thatch. It is a living embodiment of the spirit of this ancient village, its roots stretching back to 1748. This temple, dedicated to the Jodo Shinshu sect, has served as a spiritual anchor for generations. Myozenji’s main hall, a marvel of traditional architecture, stands as a beacon of tranquility amidst the bustling world. Completed in 1827, its thatched roof whispers tales of resilience and devotion. Beside the main hall sits the kuri, the former residence of the head priest and his family. Now a museum, this grand gassho-style house, built in 1817, offers a glimpse into the past. Its plastered earthen walls, a rarity in the village, speak of a time when fire was a constant threat. Step inside and imagine the family gathered around the irori fireplace, the heart of the home. The head of the household, seated with his back against the central pillar, symbolized strength and stability. His wife and children occupied their designated places, the warmth of the fire uniting them. Venture upstairs into the attic, once a haven for silkworms. Now, it houses a collection of tools and artifacts, whispering stories of daily life in Shirakawa-go. Look closely at the intricate roof structure, held together by straw ropes and witch hazel bindings, a testament to the ingenuity of the villagers. From the kuri, a covered corridor leads to the main hall. Inside, vibrant landscape paintings adorn the walls, many depicting the majestic Mount Fuji, created by the artist Hamada Taisuke in the 20th century. The Shoromon Gate, Myozenji’s grand entrance, welcomes visitors with its unique two-layered design and towering thatched roof. Built in 1801, it inspired the design of the main hall. Listen closely, and you might hear the echo of the temple bell, a replacement for the one lost during World War II, rung for ceremonies and special occasions. To the left of the gate, a yew tree planted in 1827 stands as a living monument. To the right, a cherry tree heralds the arrival of spring with its delicate blossoms. Myozenji Temple. A sanctuary of peace, a repository of history, and a testament to the enduring spirit of Shirakawa-go.
