Whose whispers dance on the wind at the Ming City Wall Ruins Park? They speak of an era when these mighty walls embraced all of Beijing, a stark contrast to the 1.5 km stretch we see today. This park, a sanctuary of history, cradles the longest and best-preserved section of Beijing’s Ming Dynasty city wall. It stretches east from Chongwenmen to Dongbianmen, then northward towards Beijing Railway Station East Street. Imagine, 550 years ago, this very wall pulsated with life. Soldiers patrolled the ramparts, their watchful eyes scanning the horizon. The Southeast Corner Tower, the largest corner tower still standing in China, housed 200 soldiers, ready to defend the city. Horses thundered up the ramps, carrying messages and supplies. Today, you can walk in their footsteps, climb the tower, and even see graffiti left by the Eight-Nation Alliance who attacked it during the Boxer Rebellion. This park isn’t just about walls and towers. It’s a vibrant green space, spanning 15.5 hectares. It features 3.3 hectares of fortifications nestled within 12.2 hectares of greenery. Ming City Wall Ruins Park is a living testament to Beijing’s resilience. Most of the original 40 km wall was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the Beijing Subway and Second Ring Road. This section survived, perhaps because of the Beijing railway station and its rail depots located just north of here. The city later transformed this area into the park we enjoy today, relocating homes and businesses. During the restoration, old bricks were collected from residents, a tangible link to the Ming Dynasty woven into the present park. So, listen closely as you wander through the Ming City Wall Ruins Park. The whispers on the wind tell tales of emperors and soldiers, of sieges and celebrations. They remind us that even in a modern metropolis, the echoes of the past can still be heard.
