Slipping through time, let’s journey to Liangxiang in the Fangshan District of Beijing. Here, we find the Haotian Pagoda, also known as the Liangxiang Pagoda. Haotian Pagoda isn’t just any pagoda. It’s a unique octagonal brick structure, standing tall at 36 meters, with five hollow tiers. Unlike other pagodas in Beijing, Haotian Pagoda is hollow, giving it a special mystique. Imagine skilled artisans during the Liao Dynasty meticulously placing each brick, creating this architectural marvel. The current brick tower dates back to the Liao Dynasty (907–1125), though the original structure was built during the Sui Dynasty. Throughout the centuries, Haotian Pagoda has undergone several reconstructions, standing as a testament to resilience and enduring beauty. In more recent times, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage recognized its importance. They invested over 16 million Chinese yuan in restoration works in 1984 and 1997. As we stand before Haotian Pagoda, we can almost hear the echoes of history whispering through its walls. Each tier has four doors, facing the cardinal directions, and “zhiling” windows in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest directions. Originally, each floor housed four Buddha sculptures, sadly, many were damaged during the turmoil of the Eight-Nation Alliance in 1901. A spiral staircase winds through the tower’s core. It allows us to ascend to the top, offering a panoramic view that would have once encompassed the 12th-century capital. Look closely, and you’ll see small orifices, known as “juwangkong,” on each floor. These may have served a military purpose during the Liao-Song Dynasty wars, offering glimpses of approaching enemies. Today, Haotian Pagoda stands proudly within Haotian Park, a tranquil oasis that opened in 1998. The park also features a serene lake, known as Haotian Lake, and several pavilions, making it a perfect spot for quiet reflection. Haotian Pagoda reminds us of the enduring power of history and the beauty of ancient architecture.
