Gazing upon the Kon’yō Jinja Shrine, can you sense the weight of history it carries? This unassuming shrine, nestled in Chiba’s Hanawa district, holds a tale of resilience and ingenuity. Kon’yō Jinja Shrine, dedicated to the agronomist Aokikoyo, stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in Japanese history.

Kon’yō Jinja Shrine was established in 1846. It commemorates Aokikoyo’s successful sweet potato cultivation, which saved countless lives during the Tenmei famine. The shrine was built on the very land where Aokikoyo’s experimental sweet potato farm flourished. Commissioned by the Southern Town Magistrate, Minowa Tadaaki, Aokikoyo’s task was to find a solution to the looming famine crisis. He established experimental farms in three locations: Koishikawa in Edo, Kukuriyama Village in Shimousa Province, and Hiraizumi Village in Kazusa Province. It was here in Hanawa, however, that his efforts truly bore fruit. His success with sweet potato cultivation spread throughout Japan, alleviating widespread suffering and marking a turning point in the nation’s agricultural history. Kon’yō Jinja Shrine is a tribute to this achievement. Aokikoyo, revered as the “Sweet Potato Pioneer” and the “Cow God,” continues to be a respected figure among locals.

The Kon’yō Jinja Shrine you see today isn’t the original structure. The shrine was relocated and rebuilt in 2004 due to road closure construction near Keisei Hanawa Station. The current shrine shares its grounds with the Akiba Shrine. The original shrine’s torii gate remains at its initial location, a quiet reminder of its past. Look for two adjacent halls within the shrine grounds. Kon’yō Jinja Shrine occupies the hall to the right of the torii, while Akiba Shrine resides on the left.
