Gazing across the Yulong River, what secrets does Jiuxian Old Town hold? This ancient village, nestled in Baisha Town near Yangshuo, whispers stories of centuries past. Jiuxian Old Town, originally built in 621 AD, stands near the remnants of Guiyi County’s ancient town. Most of the buildings reflect the exquisite style of the Qing Dynasty, boasting ornate painted beams and intricately carved pillars. One notable structure, the “Jinshi Di” estate, once housed Qixuan Li, a holder of the prestigious Jinshi qualification during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1875–1908). It was also home to Xingshu Li, a renowned general of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). This westward-facing estate, with its imposing gate and limited windows, exudes an air of strength. Its walls, constructed from massive carved stones, are fortified with strategically placed loopholes and watchtowers, wider on the inside and narrowing towards the outside. Within Jiuxian Old Town, 44 ancient houses stand as silent witnesses to the village’s rich history. The warm-hearted locals welcome visitors, offering fresh vegetables, locally raised animals, and fish at reasonable prices. The village has even attracted long-term residents like Ian from South Africa, drawn to its unique atmosphere. The unique charm of Jiuxian Old Town lies not just in its architecture, but also in its tranquil setting. Unlike bustling tourist hubs, Jiuxian retains a peaceful ambiance, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. The clear Yulong River flows alongside, reflecting the ancient buildings and the lush greenery. The spirit of Jiuxian Old Town is palpable in its preserved houses and ancient streets. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a tranquil escape and a journey into China’s rich cultural heritage.
