“Lost hope is a feeling we all know”. These words greet visitors to the Japan Christian Church Nishijin Church. This Protestant church is a place to find solace. It stands as a beacon of faith in Kyoto.
The Nishijin Church is part of the Japan Christian Church. This affiliation reflects its Protestant roots. Before the establishment of the Japan Christian Church it belonged to the Japan Congregational Church. Congregational churches value the independence of each congregation.
Let’s step back in time. The late Meiji era saw Christian missionaries. They focused on the Nishijin area. It was a district known for its textile industry. This led to the founding of the Nishijin Christian Church. It became a sanctuary for Christians. They sought peace in a bustling world. Sadly the church effectively disappeared during World War II due to forced mergers.
After the war former members rebuilt the church. Pastor Mitsuro Nakamura led this effort. Thus the Japan Christian Church Nishijin Church was reborn.
Later pastors Rev. Sachihisa Nakamura and Rev. Kouichi Takeda guided the congregation. The Nishijin Church continues its mission today. It proclaims the gospel of Jesus Christ in Nishijin. The church welcomes all. It hopes to be a place of rest for hearts both within and outside the community.
The church’s history includes key milestones. It began as the Nishijin Christian Preaching Place in 1900. It was recognized as Nishijin Christian Church in 1901. A church building was constructed in 1912. In 1941 the Japan Congregational Church merged with other Protestant churches. It formed the Japan Christian Church. The church building was removed due to forced mergers in 1945 and worship effectively ceased.
Pastor Mitsuro Nakamura became responsible for the Nishijin Church in 1949. In 1951 the church building was rebuilt. It was rebuilt at the current Horikawa Imadegawa location. Rev. Mitsuro Nakamura resigned in 1968. Rev. Sachihisa Nakamura then took over. Rev. Nakamura retired from Doshisha Junior High School in 1998. He had been a Bible teacher and principal there. In 2004 Rev. Sachihisa Nakamura resigned. Rev. Kouichi Takeda became pastor and remains so today.
The Japan Christian Church Nishijin Church stands as a testament to faith. It is a community. It is a place of hope. It is a haven in Kyoto.
