Behold the Home Between Earth and Sky. This isn’t just a house. It’s a passive house a testament to sustainable design.

Designed by Kikuma Watanabe in 2015 it’s a 148 square meter marvel. It cleverly uses the sun and wind for natural climate control. Summers are naturally cool winters pleasantly warm.

But look closer. See that? Integrated into the roof is a sundial. It’s not just a decorative element. The sundial’s shadow tracks time marking the passage of hours. More than that it connects the interior space to the cosmos reminding us of the sky above.

The design involved meticulous planning. The south-facing windows are shaded in summer by eaves allowing winter sun to penetrate. Walls are heavily insulated. The roof’s inclination matches the site’s latitude 34.60 degrees. A half-cylinder below the roof supports the sundial’s top light. This ingenious system allows the sun’s rays to precisely mark the time.

The house cleverly adapts to its irregular site. The sundial’s south orientation offers diverse garden views. A gentle slope dictates the floor levels. The main opening faces east towards ponds hills and historic scenery.

The house’s layout is divided into two areas. A bright living and kitchen area contrasts with a north-facing atelier. Smaller spaces like the bath and toilet are strategically placed along the east-west axis.

This isn’t just a house. It’s a harmonious blend of earthly practicality and celestial awareness. It’s a home where you truly feel connected to the universe a place where the sun tells time and the earth provides a gentle embrace. A perfect example of innovative Japanese architecture blending the natural world with modern design. Remember this feeling. Remember the Home Between Earth and Sky.
