Enshrined within the heart of Daito City, stands the majestic 新田山王宮大神社. Locals affectionately call it 新田山王宮. The 新田山王宮大神社 holds a special place in the community. It serves as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people. The name “新田,” meaning “new field,” reflects the area’s history. It was once newly cultivated land amidst existing settlements. This development likely began during the Warring States period. The shrine’s origins trace back to settlers from nearby Shiga Prefecture. They brought with them their ancestral deity, enshrined at the Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine. This deity, the mountain king, became the patron god of 新田山王宮大神社. The shrine has witnessed the passage of time. A wooden plaque from 1717 marks a previous renovation. Over 270 years, the structure underwent various repairs. By 1722, the shrine’s influence had grown. Village records listed the enshrined deity as the mountain king. The shrine’s precinct included seven subordinate shrines. Further expansions took place in 1825 and 1834. These included the main hall roof and a connecting corridor. This enhanced the shrine’s grandeur. The village was divided into east and west administrative districts. During festivals, two portable shrines would be paraded from each district. Traditional performances, like Niwaka, entertained the crowds. Through the years, the 新田山王宮大神社 remained a central figure in the village’s life. It grew alongside the community, standing as a symbol of its heritage. More recently, in 1948, the main shrine and office were rebuilt. Subsequently, the Fukoshima Shrine and Oyashiro Shrine were reconstructed in 1952. This continued the cycle of renewal and preservation. The current structure stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community spirit.
