“Bridge of dreams deferred” a local artist sighed once while painting the Shin-Yodogawa Bridge. The Shin-Yodogawa Bridge is more than just a structure. It is a vital artery connecting Osaka’s Kita Ward and Yodogawa Ward.

This bridge carries both National Route 423 and the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. It ensures a steady flow of traffic. The Shin-Yodogawa Bridge is a crucial part of Osaka’s infrastructure. It facilitates movement between the city center and areas like Shin-Osaka and Senri New Town. This makes it a very busy bridge.

Did you know its history stretches back to pre-war Japan? Construction began in 1939. However, material shortages during the war halted progress. Only the substructure was completed at that time. Imagine the bridge half-built for decades.

About twenty years later construction resumed. It coincided with the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen. In 1964 the underground Midosuji Line and the upstream road opened. The downstream road finished in 1970. It was just in time for the Osaka Expo.

The Shin-Yodogawa Bridge comprises a central railway bridge. Road bridges flank it on both sides. Pedestrian walkways are also present. The railway bridge uses a Langer truss design for its central span. The road bridges employ a steel plate girder structure.

The bridge’s dimensions are impressive. The upstream road section extends 794.8 meters. The downstream section is slightly longer at 813.1 meters. The upstream road is 16 meters wide with four lanes. The downstream road is 14 meters wide with three lanes. Its longest span measures 115 meters.

Design work finished in 1935. The bridge carries the Osaka Municipal Subway. The subway runs between Esak and Midosuji.

Design insights also give us a glimpse into a past vision. Plans existed for a self-anchored suspension bridge. This was similar to the Konohana Bridge. The bridge piers reflect remnants of this design.

In 1982 the bridge was designated as National Route 423. Today the Shin-Yodogawa Bridge stands as one of Osaka’s iconic bridges. The bridge is part of the “50 famous bridges of Naniwa”.
