“Suddenly, a park appears in an ordinary town full of apartments and houses.” That’s how one might describe encountering Shinike Historic Haniwa Koba Park in Osaka.

Shinike is no ordinary park. It is a park built on the ancient Haniwa factory site of Shinike. The Shinike site is Japan’s oldest and largest Haniwa factory. Legend says that the Haniwa for Emperor Keitai’s mausoleum was made here.

About 1500 years ago, this place had 18 Haniwa kilns and a workshop. The workshop was a large building with three garages. It even had residences for the Haniwa craftsmen. The park preserves these relics and opens them to the public.

Shinike not only restores the Haniwa workshop and kiln used around 450 AD. It also displays the excavated kiln Haniwa factory hall. It is comprehensive and free.

Shinsekai, meaning “New World” in Japanese, offers a glimpse into Osaka’s past. Developed in 1912, Shinsekai was modeled after New York and Paris. The southern half was inspired by Coney Island. The northern half took cues from Paris.

The centerpiece of Shinsekai was the Tsutenkaku Tower. The original tower was designed to resemble the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Damaged by fire in 1943, it was replaced in 1956 with the current 103-meter structure.

Despite its initial promise, Shinsekai faced challenges after World War II. Minimal redevelopment led to its decline. However, it retains a unique identity and colorful history.

Shinsekai offers a mix of attractions. There are low-cost restaurants, cheap clothing stores, and entertainment venues. Kushi-katsu is a culinary specialty. Diners can enjoy various meats, fish, and vegetables breaded and deep-fried on sticks.

Shinsekai is west of Tennoji Zoo and Park. It is also near Spa World. The now-closed Festival Gate aimed to revitalize the area.

The Tsutenkaku Tower provides panoramic views of Osaka. The tower connects Shinsekai with the Luna Park grounds via a tramway.

To get to Shinsekai you can use various access options. These include the JR West Osaka Loop Line and the Osaka Municipal Subway. You can also use the Hankai Tramway.

Shinsekai and its landmark Tsutenkaku Tower offer a journey through time. From its early 20th-century origins to its present-day appeal, Shinsekai remains a unique Osaka destination. Shinike’s ancient history and Shinsekai’s vibrant atmosphere create a compelling contrast. Both sites offer a unique perspective on Osaka’s rich cultural heritage.
