“Imperial temple.” Does this moniker pique your interest? Today we explore Shinzenkoji Temple. It is also known as “Imperial Temple”. This serene temple offers a glimpse into Kyoto’s rich history. Shinzenkoji Temple is a tower temple. It belongs to the Buddhist sect of Quansheng Temple. It nestles within the mountains of Quansheng Temple.

Shinzenkoji Temple’s story begins in 1243. Emperor Gokameyama desired its creation. He wished for a “Good Temple” in the capital. Like the Zenkoji Temple in Nagano.

The principal image is a statue of Amida Nyorai. It shares the same mold as the one in Zenkoji Temple. During the Muromachi period, war brought destruction. Shinzenkoji Temple burned down. Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado relocated it. It moved within the Quansheng Temple mountains.

The early Edo period saw a revival. Between 1661 and 1673, a monk named Korun Zuirui rebuilt it. The buildings you see today date back to that time.

The temple is known as the “Flower Temple of the Royal Family”. Gardens flourish here in all seasons. The newest addition is the “Hill of Purple Sunflowers”. It was created in 2021.

The front garden welcomes visitors. Weeping cherry trees bloom in spring. In early summer, purple sunflowers add color.

The main hall’s front garden unfolds before us. Carved stones and garden stones dot the moss. A pond garden lies beyond. A stone basin adorns the pond’s edge. Seasonal flowers float there.

The abbot’s east garden features moss. Clipped shrubs dominate. A weeping cherry tree graces the north garden. However this is not open to the public.

Above the main hall’s front garden sits the Aizen Hall. It enshrines Aizen Myoo. The “Hill of Purple Sunflowers” spreads nearby. The garden designer Aoki Junko created it. Seasonal flowers and plants thrive.

The temple also offers unique “Goshuin”. These are monthly seals. They include zodiac series and special prayer seals. Shinzenkoji Temple offers original seal books as well.

The temple’s beauty extends beyond its gardens. The painted screens by the Kano school are exceptional. They offer a glimpse into Japan’s artistic heritage. The temple supported Yamaguchi Gado. He devoted himself to the rebuilding of temples.
