Nine arches of history that’s what Xinhe Bridge in Shenzhen represents. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a living timeline. A testament to Shenzhen’s enduring spirit and its relentless growth.
Xinhe Bridge gracefully spans the Liao River. It connects the old and new cities of Shenzhen. This stone bridge wasn’t always Xinhe Bridge. Centuries ago it was known as Shuiqiao. The original structure was a simple stone bridge. It frequently succumbed to floods. Imagine the relentless force of the water crashing against its ancient stones.
In 1667 during the Qing Dynasty Governor Xie Zhibo rebuilt the bridge. He hoped for a more resilient structure. It was renamed Fushou Qiao meaning Longevity Bridge. Later it was also called Wan Shou Qiao or Xie Gong Qiao. This reflects the bridge’s significance and the repeated efforts to preserve it.
Unfortunately floods continued to damage Fushou Qiao. In 1687 the bridge was again rebuilt. This time by the Jiangxi governor. The bridge was strengthened. Two stone lions guarded its western end. They stood ready to watch over the waters. Iron oxen flanked the eastern end acting as breakwaters.
By 1877 the bridge was showing its age. The prefect Zhou Yuzhen commissioned further renovations. The bridge was raised and reinforced. This improved the bridge’s ability to withstand the Liao River’s power. The bridge suffered damage in both 1878 and 1916 during devastating floods.
In 1937 the bridge was rebuilt yet again. This time as a higher wooden structure. It was renamed Zhongzheng Qiao symbolizing peace and justice. This was a gesture to honor the long life of a local resident.
In 1948 the bridge became Qikong Shizhao Qiao. This meant Seven-hole Stone Arch Bridge. The bridge was improved with stone paving and new railings. Finally in 1949 it received its current name Xinhe Bridge. This name represents new peace and harmony. Since then the bridge has undergone extensive renovations ensuring its continued use and importance.
Today Xinhe Bridge stands as a symbol of Shenzhen’s growth and resilience. It continues to witness the city’s transformation from a small fishing village to a thriving metropolis.
